EduCycling for Early Childhood Literacy
10,000 Kilometres of cycling for 15 Minutes That Can Change a Child’s Future
One mission: championing 15 minutes of parent-child reading every day.
15 minutes of reading, storytelling or meaningful conversation between a parent and child every day can help shape the future of a community.
Every kilometer cycled contributes to creating book-rich environments in resource constrained communities, bringing age-appropriate children’s books closer to children and families and sparking home based reading culture.
You can be part of the journey.

What is EduCycling?
EduCycling for Early Childhood Literacy is an early-literacy awareness non-profit organization seeking to transform Uganda’s educational landscape.
We are running a fundraising, where the founder, Owiny Hakim will undertake a 10,000 km cycling journey across Uganda to raise awareness about the importance of early childhood literacy, mobilize communities and generate support for creating book-rich environments in resource-constrained areas. You can participate by cycling and spreading awareness about the importance of early childhood literacy, give financial, donate Childen books age 3 to 13
At the heart of the campaign is a simple message:
Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up surrounded by words, stories and books.
The first edition of the 10,000 km cycling journey will travel through Kampala, Kiboga, Hoima, Masindi, Lira, Agago, Kitgum, Gulu, Adjumani, and back through Gulu, Masindi, Luwero and Wakiso before returning to Kampala.
As the campaign crosses these communities, it will mobilize local literacy volunteers, engage parents and caregivers, raise awareness about early literacy and support the establishment of community-based children books access points in all Uganda’s villages.
Every kilometer represents an opportunity to bring the campaign closer to your community that needs greater access to children books and early-learning support.
But EduCycling is about more than books. It is about changing what happens after the school bell rings.
The campaign calls on parents and caregivers of children aged 3–13 years to dedicate at least 15 minutes every day reading together, storytelling or meaningful conversation.
This simple daily practice can strengthen children’s oral language, vocabulary, curiosity, communication skills and love for learning while strengthening the relationship between children and their caregivers.
15 minutes a day can become a lifetime of learning.
Why are we focused on child literacy?
Uganda faces significant challenges in foundational learning, with many children growing up in environments where access to age-appropriate books and opportunities for regular reading is limited.
Children cannot can not fully develop to their potential when parents are too busy to give them attention or read with them a story book. Lets create an environments where children can regularly encounter books, stories, language and meaningful interaction, while empowering parents and caregivers to participate actively in their children’s learning.
If homes and communities do not become part of the learning ecosystem, efforts made within schools alone may not be enough to build the strong foundations required for Uganda’s future human capital.
The Gap
There is a significant disconnect between what happens in the classroom and what happens at home.
Education is often viewed primarily as the responsibility of schools and teachers. Yet children spend a substantial amount of their lives outside the classroom, making parents, caregivers and communities important partners in early learning.
EduCycling seeks to bridge this gap by encouraging parents to become their children’s first teachers.
Educycling promotes practical commitment:
15 minutes every day.
Fifteen minutes of shared reading, storytelling or meaningful conversation can create opportunities for children to hear new words, ask questions, express themselves, develop curiosity and build positive associations with learning.
At community level, EduCycling is advocating for localized children books access points in every village and Community Literacy Volunteers, helping bring books closer to children and families in areas where access is limited.
Early Literacy Is the Foundation for All Learning
Early childhood literacy provides an important foundation for children’s future learning.
Literacy is more than the ability to read and write. Strong early language and literacy experiences help children develop vocabulary, communication, comprehension, critical thinking and the ability to engage with learning across subjects.
These skills support learning in mathematics, science, technology and other areas of education.
When children have limited opportunities to develop language and early literacy skills, they may enter formal schooling without the foundations needed to learn effectively. This can contribute to persistent learning difficulties and widen educational inequalities.
Investing in early literacy is therefore not simply an investment in reading.
It is an investment in Uganda’s human capital.
